Leaping into the w e e k e n d 🤙🏽✨
What if I told you, you didn’t need to do HIIT or cardio to lose weight, but simply needed to move about the house a bit more?
Get a clean and tidy house + look banging in a bikini?
Win. Win. 🤔
Here’s the science....👩🏼🔬
Activity thermogenesis is broken into 2 categories:
Exercise activity thermogenesis is energy expended from exercise that we intentionally engage in - like a gym sesh or a run.
Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) is the energy expended for everything we do when we’re not sleeping/exercising - walking up the stairs, washing up etc. They all burn calories, and more than we would expect.
Our careers tend to hugely impact our levels of NEAT. Nurses, waiters or anyone working in an occupation that requires you to be on your feet would have levels of NEAT enough to make the rest of us green with envy.
For those of us who spend the 9-5 chained to a desk, our levels of NEAT are generally shocking. The difference in energy expenditure between active and sedentary jobs can run into a hell of a lot of calories.
You might think that going to the gym makes up for the 8-12 hours you spend at your desk, opting not to take the stairs, or leave your house to pick up dinner rather than ordering in because you’ve already spent that whole hour on the treadmill. BUT the calories burned with the accumulation of all of those small activities would significantly outdo the sweat and tears you left behind in the gym.
It can vary by up to 2,000 calories a day between 2 people of the same size....
Just by moving around the comfort of your own home – you could burn an additional 2,000 calories without even trying, rather than a full hour of HELL staring at a dial on a stationary bike burning max 400 cals.
Focusing solely on the energy you use while exercising is one of the biggest fat loss mistakes you can make. Exercise will never make up for the energy you could be using living an active lifestyle. If you want to effectively lose fat, you need to MOVE.
- Get a standing desk
- Take the stairs
- Go for a lunchtime walk
- Sack your cleaner and do your own chores 🧼
- Take every chance to MOVE 🤸
