it’s time for catching up on #marchmeetthemaker2020!
Day 1: Story—my name is Joanna, i’m married to Josh Grelle, & we have three amazing furbabies, Jipsy, Yuri, & Kanan. i have always loved sports & have been a runner since i was 11 years old. i started drawing when i was very young & later got interested in pottery & photography in high school. for various reasons, i stopped pursuing a career in the arts, but i found my love for drawing again in my late 20s when i discovered how fun #fanart
when Josh came into my life, i began to draw some of the characters he voices, including favorites like Sadao Maou from #TheDevilisaPartTimer
(a hilarious #anime
that you really should watch!). i’ve had the good fortune to be in the booth as well, & it’s a little surreal to draw a character that i voiced myself. my fave is Fuzzball Doppelganger from #MoroseMononokean!
he’s a mischievous little bean & so fun to both voice & draw!
i was doing a lot of digital stuff on my iPad & Cintiq, & i really got into digital drawing & painting of various furbabies. then, in the fall of 2018, a friend shared his #acrylicpour
paintings, & i was fascinated. of course i had to see what it was all about! i dove in head first, learning as much as i could as fast as i could & practicing all the time. this medium is so zen for me, & the deep work is both exciting & soothing. there’s also something about tangible play with various color palettes that is hugely appealing. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤🤎👍🏻
i have #bipolar
disorder, comorbid #depression,
& while art can be a great release, i also struggle with it at times. i sunk into heavy depression at the end of 2019 & was unable to create. @catalystcreativearts
invited me to a glass fusing workshop, & then i heard about glass fusing courses held by @craftguildofdallas
. i thought, “why not?” & both the workshop & course have helped me both pull out of the depression AND start creating again, in very exciting ways. i’ve very recently returned to painting, & i’m researching & sketching & planning more than ever. i am very grateful to Helen, Jaime, & Diana for standing with me & encouraging me both as a person & artist!
