Happy birthday to this God of a man.
I think it's safe to say that since his portrayal of Aragorn in Lord of the Rings, Viggo Mortensen has been my favourite actor.
If you haven't seen all his major performances then I highly recommend you do. This guy could have easily made a huge name for himself in Hollywood, but being the humble guy that he is, he sticks to projects that he knows will have profound messages and characters that he can really connect to. I feel he's now a name that everyone knows and respects, even if it is quietly. I'm so glad his son convinced him to play Aragorn. He was perfect for that role. I've seen polls suggesting Daniel Day Lewis would have been a better Aragorn and whilst I agree Day Lewis is an incredible method actor, I honestly don't think the Lord of the Rings would have been the same without Mortensen.
Off the top of my head his movies I'd recommend are,
A History of Violence
He also does a fantastic portrayal of the devil in a movie which isn't too great.
Viggo also comes across as a very decent person, which Jon Rhys Davies alluded to when I met him. His calm demeanour and dry sense of humour are very relatable mixed in with moments of madness (rugby tackling Sean Bean like a madman for no apparent reason 🤣, charging off to go fishing between scenes, almost dying multiple times on set, passionately making out with Billy Boyd for lols) and moments of incredible generosity. (Buying Arwens stunt double the horse that portrayed Asfaloth, travelling across the entirety of New Zealand to make Liv Tyler comfortable in a scene). 😅 I'll stop man crushing now but i do hope I get to meet this guy someday. Although I know I'll likely be lost for words. Never change Viggo and keep aging like a fine wine.
