I have to admit, we have been cocktail and spirit snobs for some time, turning up our noses at vodka. Why the contempt for the spirit and those who drink it? Maybe it’s due to the craft cocktail movement that has pushed us to seek flavor, propping up spirits like gin. But we can’t ignore the giant vodka has become, surpassing even whiskey as the number one selling spirit in the USA in the late 1970’s, a position vodka still proudly holds. Surely, one of the reasons for this is the small batch movement for craft spirits, like the wonders pouring out of @seventhreedistilling
We have the privilege of tasting and creating a cocktail using St Roch Vodka from New Orleans. This is a beautifully handcrafted vodka delivering creamy aromas with notes of cane sugar and a soft, buttery mouthfeel. This premium spirit is distilled five times for purity and filtered for five days.
¼ oz Cane syrup
½ oz Mathilde Poire Liqueur (Pear Liqueur)
½ Lemon juice
¾ oz Sherry
1 ½ oz St. Roch vodka
Top Note Grapefruit sparkling mixer
Shake all ingredients, except the sparkling mixer, in a tin with ice. Strain into a highball glass with a fancy highball ice. Add a slice of orange into the glass and top it off with the sparkling mixer from @topnotetonic
As bartenders, we have done a disservice by not using more vodka like St. Rock in our creative repertoire. When you think about it, you really need to just start out with something tasty and add vodka and you get an instant cocktail, no mixologist required. Did I just say that outloud?
