When you're almost 26,
you'll be driving home
from corners you've hid in
while LA stormed around you.
You'll park and sit on the hood of your car
dusty, hot to the touch
and watch a strange Arizona sunset.
You'll tap your keys to your chest.
You'll tell yourself
"don't push this,
just let it be."
You know this heart leap.
You know how it guides you
to lands where the sky invites
a release of the burden
into its endless grains of sand,
each a separate space to hold you.
Really hold you.
"do something different this time."
I know you think you've been here before,
but you're only 25
and for your birthday this year
you just want to begin.
Still, I don't mean to put you down -
you may be young
but you know how the story goes,
how we all must wait
to be whittled down
to the perfect point.
And you know, too,
that it will be perfect.
And that, you who are almost 26,
is no small feat. So smile a smile
as long as the 10
and let this life take you East.
Let it take you West. "It will be perfect
as all things are
and always have been."
